A COMMUNITY OF LEADERS BUILDING LEADERSHIP FOR THE FUTURE

THE ZOKU MISSION

BUILDING CULTURAL BRIDGES THROUGH MUSIC, EDUCATION & COMMERCE

In 1996, a group of highly motivated community leaders with deep roots in the Little Tokyo-based Japanese American, South Central and Boyle Heights/East Los Angeles communities committed themselves to a collaborative initiative -- to promote cross-cultural harmony via support for scholarship and medical professional youth pipeline education fundraising efforts.  Led by Civil Rights Movement and community Leader Roland Hayes Betts Presents Jazz At Drew, these community volunteers supported the annual scholarship fundraising R&B and jazz music festival held at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine & Science in Watts, California.  The group adopted the name, THE ZOKU, drawing upon a unique ever-expanding resourceful pool of seasoned leaders from a variety of locales and experiences.  The term "ZOKU" derives from the Japanese word meaning tribe, clan or family, often used as a suffix to denote a group with a common shared membership interest, such as "jazz-zoku" to denote jazz aficionados.

Appealing to the strongly held belief that live music appreciation is a universal common ground, THE ZOKU launched the Legacy Harmony Music Series (LHMS) featuring music performances by emerging artists and headline entertainers.  LHMS serves as a catalyst for unifying communities to support local youth education & leadership initiatives, while simultaneously promoting collaborative opportunities for non-profits, individuals and corporate philanthropists.

And by so doing, we strongly encourage you to join us in --
